The location of Airlie Gardens on the shores of Bradley Creek (Wrightsville Sound) provides a visitor with historical gardens, freshwater lakes bordering on saltwater oyster beds, sweeping gardens always in bloom and towering Oaks. The Garden was originally part of a private estate named Airlie owned by Pembroke and Sarah Wharton Jones. Pembroke Jones was a financier and social leader from Wilmington, born in 1858 Pembroke passed in 1919. Mrs. Jones began the gardens with an extensive collection of Azaleas. The character of the gardens remains much as it was during the Jones's occupancy. The oldest Live Oak in North Carolina, over 500 years old, is in the gardens. Known as The Airlie Oak it is celebrated with a central location surrounded by seasonal gardens. The hours are 9-5 daily, there is an admission. Tickets can be purchased online.
